What is a Licensed Therapist?

    

     All “licensed” mental health professionals in California are licensed and regulated by the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). Each licensed professional has a license number that makes it possible for consumers/clients to verify their standing.  Licensed therapists have completed their graduate or professional degrees, as well as their 3,000 postgraduate, supervised clinical hours over a minimum of two years.  In addition, they have passed the required clinical and ethical exams required by the California Board of Behavioral Science.  The Discovery team includes Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, as well as Licensed Clinical Social Workers.

What is an Associate Therapist?

 

     All “associate” mental health professionals in California are registered and regulated by the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS).  Each associate has a registration number that makes is possible for consumers/clients to verify their standing.  Associate therapists have completed their graduate or professional degrees. They are completing the clinical training hours required by the licensing board. All of their clinical work is supervised by licensed therapists, who have been licensed for a minimum of two years. The Discovery team includes Associate Marriage and Family Therapists, as well as Associate Clinical Social Workers.

What is an Intern/Trainee Therapist?

 

     Intern/Trainees have completed at least one year of their graduate or professional program, and are completing the required number of clinical hours needed to complete their degree. All of their clinical work is supervised by licensed therapists, who have been licensed for at least two years.  The Discovery team includes Marriage and Family Therapist trainees, as well as Masters Social Work Interns.
